Partnership Opportunities to Transform Food Systems

With the world's ever-growing population and ever-changing eating habits, the world's food supply is in real danger of running out of food, according to a new report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

In fact, the report says the world's food supply could run out of food by 2050 if global warming continues at its current rate, which is 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, CNBC reports.

The report, which looked at the effects of climate change on the world's food supply, notes that food production is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

The authors of the report, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, say it's time for the world's food companies to step up to the plate and help farmers adapt to climate change while at the same time reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the authors, the food industry is "uniquely positioned to integrate innovative solutions and mobilize funding to transform food systems in response to climate change."

For example, the authors say climate-resilient crops can be engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, while food companies are "leaders in the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices among their suppliers," including adopting sustainable farming practices.
