"It's almost like Parsons designed a baby school."
That's howSakina Pitts, principal of New Jersey's Newark School of Fashion and Design, describes her school's collaboration with New York's Parsons School of Design, per NJ.com.
The two are working together to create a high school specializing in fashion and design, one of three new career and technical education (CTE) programs planned by the Newark Board of Education.
The NSFD, which opened in 2021 and is one of the first of its kind in the US, was born out of superintendent Roger Le'n's desire to explore progressive approaches to CTE programming in the city's public schools.
Le'n contacted Parsons, which is located just across the Hudson River from Newark, to see if there was any way the two could work together.
"As discussions evolved, we began to think about how to best create a world-class high school education environment that gets students excited about a career in fashion and design and arms them with the skills needed to get a running start in the industry or even start their own fashion companies," Giselle Morell, head of marketing activations and customer engagement for N Ventures, tells NJ.com.
