World Ocean Day: YGLs outline how we can protect our seas

June 8 is World Ocean Day, and this year's theme is "building new alliances to protect and conserve our magnificent oceans," according to the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface and plays a key role in regulating the planet's climate and supporting its biodiversity, but it's facing "several serious threats," including climate change, overfishing, and millions of tons of plastic waste ending up in the ocean every year, the Young Global Leaders say in a press release.

"From scientists and policymakers to industry representatives and local communities, we must unite by a shared commitment to sustainable ocean management," the leaders say.

They outline three ways to do so: "We can reset the ocean economy with protection yielding more production,"Kristin Rechberger, CEO of Dynamic Planet, USA, says in the press release.

"Marine reserves serve as 'fish factories,' lifting all sectors that rely on ocean lifeparticularly tourism inside the reserves and sustainable fishing outside."

Enric Sala, Explorer-in-Residence at National Geographic Society, adds: "The world needs more marine life so the ocean can continue providing for us.

We are all citizens of this planet, and we should take our roles here seriously."
