Internet users in Kenya, Rwanda, and elsewhere in Eastern and Southern Africa were shocked to learn over the weekend that their Internet service was down.
The problem, which caused some to lose access to social media and other websites, was apparently caused by a submarine fiber-optic cable laid under the Red Sea, Gizmodo reports.
According to a post at Kenya's Nation, service providers have since clarified that the problem was caused by the construction of a new cable under the sea, not the grounding of an old one.
The undersea cable is expected to be in place by the end of the year.
