Blackmail or Common Sense? German Mayors on Why They'Re Striking Deals with Climate Activists

For more than a year, members of environmental protest group Last Generation have been glueing themselves to roads in Germany to call for tougher action against climate change.

Now mayors across the country are agreeing to the group's demands, including speed limits on highways and the return of a nationwide public transport ticket, EuroNews Green reports.

"I think we can reach some kind of social tipping point here," says Theo Schnarr, a member of Last Generation.

But not everyone is thrilled with the deal.

"Some people say, 'OK, did this mayor get blackmailed? Did he do more than he should do as a mayor?'" Schnarr says.

"Others say, 'Yeah, well, every mayor can just write a letter now and then the Last Generation will stop blocking their streets.' But Schnarr believes it was a 'brave' letter to write, one that represents the collective action needed to tackle climate change."
