One of Denver's so-called "innovation zones" is going to be history after the end of the school year.
The Northeast Denver Innovation Zone, which had three public schools in it, will dissolve at the end of the month, reports the Denver Post.
Two of those schools, McAuliffe International School and McAuliffe Manual Middle School, will now be under the control of Denver Public Schools, and the third, Swigert International School, will be joining the last remaining innovation zone, the Luminary Learning Network.
Chalkbeat Colorado reports the zone was created in 2000 as a way for traditional public schools to experiment with ways they might help student learning.
Many of the NDIZ schools have seen high test scores, but in a letter to families and staff, the zone's board of directors said the district's "shifting philosophy on innovation zones" has created "an uncertain environment to operate NDIZ."
The board says it "engaged in mediation with [DPS] in January 2024 and were unable to resolve ongoing challenges," including disagreements on the zone's "innovation plan," after teachers at one of the zone's largest schools, Northfield High, voted to leave NDIZ last year. Read the Entire Article
