When the University of Connecticut's Child Care Center was under construction in Farmington, Conn., the building's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system was more than a decade old, per the Hartford Courant.
But by the end of a year-long pilot program announced in February by Gov.
Ned Lamont, that system would be up and running with an energy-saving technology called Ultra High Performance, or UHP.
The system, developed by a Shelton-based company called Budderfly, "will demonstrate its ability to decarbonize and deliver energy savings for government agencies and organizations," per a press release from Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
UConn Health was this year's recipient of the Innovation Award, a special distinction recognizing exceptional public sector sustainability innovation.
The 12-month pilot program, which will see UHP systems installed in the center's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, is part of the state's "GreenerGov" initiative, which aims to reduce environmental impacts and save taxpayers money, per the Courant.
