Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing is on the rise, and S&P Global is offering a look at some of the biggest trends it expects to see in 2022.
ESG investing is defined as investing in companies that make good on their promises to the environment and society at large, as well as in their own shareholders.
It's a relatively new area of investment, but investors have poured billions into ESG-focused funds in recent years.
One of the first ESG indexes was created by S&P in 1999, and since then, S&P Dow Jones Indices has created a number of ESG-focused indexes.
In its report on ESG trends, S&P says that in 2022 there will be a "bigger focus on accountability and ESG implementation rather than 'greenwashing' or using the ESG term to drum up investor interest."
A key takeaway from the report is that "engagement and holding corporations' government agents responsible will be the biggest shift for the investing style in 2022."
