Marfaa Naseem is a 22-year-old student of Pakistan's Quaid-i-Azam University, and she's used a US grant to set up a rainwater harvesting and hydroponic farm on her rooftop.

The idea came to her as she was looking at ways to reduce the amount of water she had to pay for a tanker to carry.

"I wanted to save money on water bills," she tells the Daily Pakistan.

"I installed a system on my roof to collect rainwater and use it for growing hydroponic plants."

She says the system has so far collected 48,000 liters of rainwater, which she used to pay for a tanker, per a press release.

The idea came to her as part of the Green Urban Development School program run by the US Embassy Islamabad and the School of Leadership Foundation.

It's a "pivotal initiative in promoting sustainable urbanization in Pakistan," says the managing director of the foundation, adding that "by nurturing the green skills of our youth and empowering them to implement innovative solutions, we are not only addressing immediate environmental challenges but also shaping the leaders of tomorrow who will drive lasting change."

The school is currently running at QAU and at COMSATS University Islamabad. Read the Entire Article
