Rivne: A Beacon of Sustainability in a Time of Turmoil

The Ukrainian city of Rivne is trying to become the first city in the world to be carbon neutral by 2030, the Guardian reports.

According to the Telegraph, Ukraine has been grappling with a lack of reliable energy data since Russia invaded the country in 2014.

In an effort to remedy that, Rivne is joining the Pilot Cities Program, which aims to help cities become more energy efficient and carbon neutral.

"The challenge they want to tackle systematically by joining the program is the lack of quality data and the lack of long-term planning, including with regard to climate neutrality," EIT Climate-KIC, the organization running the program, says in a press release.

According to the Telegraph, Ukraine is aiming to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050.

In order to become carbon neutral, Rivne wants to reduce its energy consumption by 25% by 2030 and become "the first Ukrainian city to achieve climate neutrality," EIT Climate-KIC says in the press release.
